Fuel cells are reaching commercial viability sooner in other applications such as portable electronics, including laptops, cell phones, MP3 players and games, aiming to supplement the ability of batteries to power these mobile devices for extended periods of time. There are a number of reasons why fuel cells may prove more competitive in portable electronics than in cars, including the favorable cost, lifetime requirement and easier distribution in this market.

General Automotive Announces JV to Develop Advanced Fuel Cell Technology
General Automotive, a provider of parts, accessories and advanced technology for the automotive industry, has announced a joint venture with SenCer to develop, commercialize and market the latter's UltraTemp ceramic composite materials for accelerating the development of energy-efficient, environmentally friendly fuel cell technologies.

Ballard Reports Second Quarter 2008 Results
"Product shipments were up 15% this quarter over Q2 last year and 51% year-to-date," said John Sheridan, Ballard's President and CEO. "Second quarter revenues were impacted by the timing of customer orders and lower engineering revenues from the automotive transaction earlier this year. On a proforma basis, year-to-date revenue increased 12% over the same period last year."

Alternative Energy Project Under Way at Robins AFB
The Defense Logistics Agency kicked off its fuel cell forklift pilot project here July 24 at the Defense Depot Warner Robins. It is part of an effort to find alternative energy sources and reduce America's growing dependence on energy imports.
