Nissan Doubles the Power Density of Next Generation Fuel Cell Stack
Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has developed a new fuel cell stack with double the power density of the previous generation stack. The new fuel cell stack also achieves a 35% cost reduction mainly due to half the use of platinum, a key material used in the production of fuel cell stacks. Test fleets incorporating the improved fuel cell stacks will be operational by the end of this year.

Fuel Cell Partnership Urges a Goal for 2014
Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and fueling stations to support them could expand dramatically statewide over the next decade, according to the West Sacramento-based California Fuel Cell Partnership.

But the state should plan to spend up to $90 million from 2010 through 2014 for hydrogen fuel stations, the group said.

Nanotech Fuel Cell Research May Clear Hydrogen Hurdles
The twin projects will both use similar nano-scale engineering in very different applications, explained team member Steve McIntosh, an assistant professor of chemical engineering. One half of the project will apply new nano-scale structures to try and create a new type of "solar cell" that will gather the energy of sunlight to electrochemically split water into its molecular components of oxygen and hydrogen, which could potentially provide a practically limitless, renewable source of hydrogen.

Home-Brew Kits for Hydrogen May Bring it Back into Contention as a Vehicle Fuel
The brain behind this idea is Donald Highgate, a polymers expert, who made his name in the 1970s by developing soft contact lenses. The polymer he has come up with this time is used to make what are known as proton-exchange membranes. These, depending on how the device containing them is set up, can act as the guts of a fuel cell or as its opposite, turning water and electricity into hydrogen and oxygen.
